Problem solving is a key skill for independent contributors, managers, and leaders alike. Unfortunately, too many would-be problem solvers dive too quickly into solutions that miss the real problems altogether, the consequences of which only appear after months or years of embarrassing results. Much time and resource is wasted when problem solvers do not take the time to insure that they are working with an accurate and comprehensive view of the problems involved. Worse, sometimes solving part of problem(s) or the "wrong" problems can create more or worse problems. Finally, anticipating potential problems and "solving" them before they arise is becoming increasingly important in a world in which the rate of technological and organizational change continues to accelerate.
